Using PI Real-Time SQC (CBT)

The PI Real-Time SQC (Statistical Quality Control) CBT is now available as a self-paced learning tool for customers who would like to use our client and server based tools to help operations distinguish between variations in the process that are due to an assignable cause from the inherent variations that normally occur. This classes teaches both the client and server SQC tools. The SQC add-in to PI ProcessBook is presented as a tool to build SQC charts. The Real-Time SQC server component that ships with the PI Enterprise Server Professional and the PI Enterprise Server with the Advanced Server Applications Pack is taught for those who want to define PI SQC Alarm tags and other supporting tags that historize the SQC Alarm state, control limits, derived values, and operator comments.  See the description of the PI Server Applications for more information on PI Real-Time SQC.

The CBT consists of 2 hours of voice and video demonstrations. The topics taught include the basics of Statistical Quality Control, how to use the add-in to PI ProcessBook to produce SQC charts that use the standard Western Electric rules, and how to establish on the PI server SQC alarm tags that can be trended in the SQC add-in. The class is a self-study course delivered on CD-ROM as a series of screen videos with narration accompanied by a workbook. The tutorials use screen video and voice playback to deliver software demonstrations and instructor lectures.

The topics are laid out in an easy to navigate menu system that provides quick access to any topic. This means that you have the option of viewing the entire course from beginning to end, selecting only certain lessons at convenient times, or returning to the course at a later date for a quick refresher.  Each video is designed to be about three minutes long, so you can drill down to the information you need without sitting through a lot of information you don't.

A menu lists each topic and how long it takes to complete.

The Using PI Real-Time SQC CBT is a series of short screen demonstrations with voice narration. These narrations have been placed in a web browser interface.  No installation procedure is required to run the videos from the web menu, although you can choose to automatically add a shortcut to the main menu to your desktop.  The user can pause, fast-forward, and rewind the screen video clips.

Users work through the tutorials by first finding a feature on the main menu that they are interested in (for example, "TestStatus Tag"). This link opens up a second window with details of each video, including its length in minutes and seconds.  If the user has access to a PI server that supports Real-Time SQC, he can easily switch between applications to practice what was demonstrated.

We estimate it would take a user 1day to go through all the material, including doing the exercises that are demonstrated. There is a total of 2 hours of video with voice narration.

Videos demonstrate how to configure SQC Alarm Tags.

System Requirements
The tutorials do not require access to a PI server. However, if you have access to a PI server with Real-Time SQC, you can practice the tutorials by switching between the demonstration and the application.

Hardware Requirements:
  • Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, XP or later version
  • 90 MHz processor
  • 16 MB of RAM
  • Windows-compatible sound card and speakers or headphones
Software Requirements (to view the video demonstrations):
  • Internet Explorer 5.0+
  • Camtasia Player (included with software)
Software Requirements (to try the exercises shown in the demonstrations):
  • Access to a PI Enterprise Server Professional or a PI Enterprise Server with Advanced Server Applications Pack.
  • PI-ProcessBook

If you want to try the exercises, the PCs should be able to connect to the local PI server so that live data will be available.

The files used including the screen video and voice narration remain stored on the CD-ROM and are not installed locally.

Pricing
The price of the tutorials is $250 per user, which includes the CD-ROM and workbook.  The tutorials are licensed for use by individual users. The tutorial may be deployed on a server for use by the licensed users. Copied on a server the tutorials occupy several hundred megabytes of disk space.
